Bere Ferrers Community Shop

When the only shop in Bere Ferrers closed in 2006, a group of concerned villagers decided to open a community shop. It would be open on Saturday mornings and would provide goods which the villagers required and also offer a place to meet neighbours over a friendly pot of tea or cafetière of coffee.

The venture was an immediate success and has been open every Saturday since its inception. Stalls sell a variety of local goods including fresh vegetables, home-made cakes, greeting cards, home-made fudge and chocolates, eggs, cider, knitted gifts, pet supplies, health food items, plants, Fairtraid goods, home-made jams and marmalades, cushions and Devon cheeses.

The shop is open every Saturday from 10am to noon every week except when Christmas Day falls on a Saturday when it will be open on Christmas Eve for the same times.

Tea, coffee, soft drinks and home-made cakes are available, all served by teams of able volunteers.

The shop is staffed entirely by volunteers; currently the total number is about 60, which is more than 20% of the number of village inhabitants – this is truly a community shop. It won the Queen’s Award for Community Service in 2012.

Used by most of the village and visited by walkers, horse riders and those who arrive by train….. you are assured of a warm welcome and delicious refreshments.
